domaine.au: opening on October 1st, 2019

In 2016, the Australian registry (auDA) approved the opening of second level domains (domaine.au). It will soon be a reality (auda.org).

In a temporary document, auDA indicated that this liberalization of the registration rules should take effect on 1 October 2019.

The registration of a domain.au will nevertheless be subject to the requirement of an “Australian presence”. This may be justified by an Australien trademark application or registration.

Third-level domain owners (domaine.com.au) will be given priority. They will have to show up from April 1st, 2020.
