New gTLD : get prepared for the .MUSIC domain names
The wait is (almost) over! The .MUSIC new gTLD had naturally attracted many registry applicants, including Amazon, Donuts and Google. After a few Legal Rights Objections and Community objections procedures, DotMusic Limited Foundation was finally designated as the .MUSIC registry. Its program includes an advisory committee in which all the stakeholder of the music industry are represented: artists, copyright management organizations, publishers, independent labels, artists’ agents, ministries in charge of culture, radios, etc.
The DotMusic Limited Foundation project is supported by the powerful Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) and the International Artist Organization (IAO).
The .MUSIC was designed as a gTLD reserved for the music industry community. It is therefore exclusive. The conditions of eligibility are strictly limited to the members of this community. In addition, the process of acquiring a .MUSIC domain name will include an authentication process by phone and email. The registry will, of course, provide for a sunrise period the calendar of which has not yet been announced. However, the first domain names will be registered in 2020.
Lastly, DotMusic Limited Foundation promises effective procedures for removing sites or content that do not meet the eligibility requirements (the site must be dedicated to music) or that violate intellectual property rights.
