New gTLDs: Do not forget the preventive registrations!

Since the new gTLDs offer new opportunities for brand owners, they also offer cybersquatters the same opportunities. It suffices to observe the (more or less recent) decisions made under the auspices of the World Intellectual Property Organization to note an upsurge in cybersquatting by the registration and use of non-similar domain names (typosquatting) but identical to the trademarks. One can mention a few recent examples for illustrative purposes:

This trend may invite trademark owners to consider preventive registrations more seriously. Indeed, it is inconceivable that a trademark owner gives away to third parties control of identical domain names that would suggest to the consumer that the site in question emanates from a genuine and reliable source. In addition, it should be borne in mind that the cost of registering a domain name (even a new gTLD) remains lower than all the costs necessary to complete a UDRP.
