Few email and social network providers allow use of IDN

There are still numerous technical problems attached to the use of internationalized domain names (IDN, or non-Latin characters) especially where email addresses are concerned. This was the conclusion reached at the TLDCON 2016 conference which was held in Tbilissi, Georgia on 7 and 8 September of this year. The conference was organised by the RU Centre (Russia) as Russia with 900 000 domain names in Cyrillic letters, is the world's largest market for IDN, in particular for the .RU in Cyrillic letters.

Many technical problems remain however. In fact, it is virtually impossible to use Cyrillic letters in an email address or on social networks. On a technical level, this is possible with the UTF-8 standard. In reality however, Cyrillic letters are not used by email providers and social networks with the notable exception of Google Gmail. The RU Centre wishes to draw worldwide attention to the subject of IDN and has started a petition which can be found here URL. It should be noted that Chinese IDN do not appear to have this type of problem. Perhaps this is only a technical problem encountered by Russian service providers?
