L’Oréal has released the details of the launch of their new gTLD .MAKEUP. This will be the first among closed gTLDs (including for instance .MUSIC, .BLOG also) to be launched. This will certainly be followed closely by all stakeholders.
Indeed, fearing the creation of monopolies, the GAC in its "Beijing Declaration" asked ICANN that these extensions be open to all and registries had to promise that these closed new generic TLDs will be opened to third parties.
The .MAKEUP registration requirements are now online. Among other requirements, the applicant must evidence a "strong" link with the cosmetics sector. But in the end, these requirements are vague, and the domain names award decision will be at the sole discretion of the registry. It thus appears that this launch will be a test for the other "closed generic" new extensions.
The .MAKEUP sunrise period starts on 8 September and lasts until 18 October.
More on this topic soon.
