With over 7 million downloads soon after its release, the “Pokemon Go” mobile application makes a truly global buzz. This new game, based on augmented reality, is presented as the most downloaded application on mobile application stores.
This unconditional success already has an impact on domain name registrations, with nearly 4000 registered domain names using the POKEMON trademark in only 7 days, mostly in the .COM and .NET TLDs, according to Verisign registry. According to our verifications, more than 400 domain names have been registered under New gLTDs in the same period, such as the domain name <pokemongo.game>.
These massive registration volumes raise the question of Nintendo’s domain names policy as well as their response to it.
One might expect a wave of “Pokemon” UDRP cases on summer 2016. Stay tuned!
