.AU will open its second level

April 18, 2016

The registry in charge of the .AU, the Australian national TLD, has just announced that it will soon be possible to register **second-level domain names within this extension.

This means that it will be possible to register .AU domain names directly, without having to register .COM.AU or .ORG.AU as still is the case today.

This decision was just announced, but will not be implemented on short term. A development process has to be examined, in particular in order to protect the existing registrations.

It appears that the opening of the .AU second-level domains will likely occur in 2017.
