Afilias threatens to cut drastically the information displayed in the WHOIS of its TLDs ... and then backtracks.

6 April 2018

The registry Afilias, which operates among other TLDs .info, has announced this week its vision of how the WHOIS would be displayed as from the 25th of May after the introduction of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) of the European Union.

To summarize, there would be nothing left in the WHOIS records of the domain names, at the exception of the registrar name and the DNS. Afilias, which manages among others gTLDs and new gTLDs, could have waited for the recommendations of ICANN, especially after the letter of ICANN's CEO and President Göran Marby to the EU Commission with questions regarding the information which could be displayed or not in the WHOIS after the implementation of the GDPR.

Afilias' unilateral decision seems very hasty and anticipates further problems for trademarks owners with a significant increase in the number of abusive (and anonymous) domain registrations in the wake of the GDPR's implementation.

However, a mere 48 hours after issuing this statement, Afilias backtracked and decided to freeze its plan.

To be continued; stay tuned!
