The Australian domain name space will soon see its greatest evolution in decades, as the registry has decided on the forthcoming opening of domain registrations under .AU*, in addition to the usual **.COM.AU and .NET.AU.
It was already decided that the registration of .AU domain names will be reserved in priority for the holders of the same .COM.AU et .NET.AU domains. Other issues remain pending such as prior trademark rights and the banning of certain strings from registration.
Equally, the Registry has yet to determine the duration of the priority period for third level domain name registrants as well as the date before which such registrations should have been made. The purpose of the registry is to avoid speculation on the registration of domain names in .COM.AU and .NET.AU ** for the sole purpose of obtaining domain names in **.AU.
For these reasons, the Australian registry opened a public consultation to obtain the opinion of the general public. Most of the questions are similar to those asked by Nominet at the opening of the .UK name space.
The consultation is open until the 10 November 2017, at [this link] (https://www.auda.org.au/news/au-is-changing-direct-registration-public-consultation-opens/).
The opening date of **. AU ** has not yet been announced. We are following this news and will provide you with any relevant information
