According to the latest Verisign Domain Name Report, the number of top level domains (TLDs) registered during the second quarter of 2017 was up by 1.3 million or 0.4% over the first quarter of 2017. This represents a 2.1% increase over the second quarter of 2016.
Country code TLDs (ccTLDs) saw an increase of approximately 0.8% over the first quarter of 2017 and 2.6% over the same period for 2016.
There are now approximately 331.9 million domain name registrations worldwide and the number increases by approximately 6.7% per year.
The top five most popular extensions are currently: “.com” 129.2 million, “.cn” 21.4 million, “.tk” 19.1 million, “.de” 16.2 million and “.net” 15.1 million.
The number of new gTLDs however fell from 25.4 million registrations at the end of the first quarter of 2017 to 24.3 million at the end of the second quarter. The decrease is largely due to the expiration of a large number of “.xyz” speculative domains registered in 2016 and not renewed.
The general increase in domain name registrations is mainly due to an increase in the use of the internet, social media, e-commerce, smart phone possession as well as the emergence of developing markets such as India.
