China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has published new cybersecurity legislation which will be effective from 31 March 2018.
This legislation will prohibit the creation or provision of virtual private networks (VPN) which enable Chinese internet users to bypass the “great firewall” a system which blocks users from banned sites.
Companies who wish to operate VPNs will need an authorization from MIIT.
VPNs are widely used by Chinese citizens to “climb the wall” in order to visit national or foreign banned websites.
The new legislation will be implemented on a gradual basis and it appears for the time being at least that Chinese internet users will still be able to use certain VPNs which are located outside of China.
