All domain name registries and registrars are obliged to deposit the personal data of domain registrants with escrow agents on a regular basis.
This makes it possible to retrieve the data in the event of bankruptcy or dissolution of the domain name service provider or data loss.
The German registry DENIC received ICANN's approval to operate as an escrow provider in March 2017. DENIC announced the opening of the service at the beginning of June.
Of the nine companies that received ICANN's approval, only two are European. DENIC claims to be the only escrow provider fully in line with the European regulations on the protection of personal data.
