February 6, 2017 French Politics is currently focused on “Penelopegate” which has been widely covered by French and foreign media since the end of January 2017. In this context, potential alternatives to the candidacy of François Fillon are being discussed by members of “Les Republicains” political party. With this in mind, several domain names consisting of the name of potential candidates and “2017” were registered between the end of January and early February 2017. Some of those domain names may have been registered on behalf of the relevant candidates but it is reasonable to assume that at least some of the following domain names were registered by third parties who saw an opportunity in view of the current political news:
On another note, the far-right political media “Breitbart News Network” originating in the United States, announced its intention to expand its operations to France following the election of Donald Trump, as U.S. President. The announcement, made in mid-November 2016, was quickly followed by the registration of the following domain names, apparently by an Anti-Trump activist ( source ):
The registrant of these domain names more than likely plans to redirect them towards the websites of non-profit organizations that fight racism and anti-Semitism!
Without considering the legitimacy of the above-listed domain name registrations, both situations illustrate the necessity of obtaining the registration of strategic domain names before making media announcements (new service, expansion abroad, etc).
