What is a premium domain name?
A post by Michael Keshen summarizes the question.
A premium domain:
a) is more expensive than normal, due to its perceived higher value ;-|
b) is a domain which is already owned by a person or a registry
c) the premium qualification is assessed by factors such as for instance the length of the term, its brandability and/or its key words and generics nature.
Until recently, a domain name sold at a premium rate was also renewed at the same premium rate.
Several registries such as Rightside and Minds+Machines announced they are getting rid of premium renewal fees for all of their premium domain names.
To quote Kevin Murphy in Domain Incite "Are we witnessing the beginning of the end for the premium renewal business model?"
In other words: who's next to change its renewal model?
