January 12, 2017
The purchase of the American company Yahoo! by Verizon was announced on January 9, 2017, together with a change of name from Yahoo! to Altaba.
Although the company had filed corresponding trademark applications and registered the domain name altaba.com prior to the press conference, it is clear that Yahoo! has somewhat messed with its digital rebranding.
Between January 9 and 11, dozens of domain names reproducing the trademark ALTABA were indeed registered in national as well as generic extensions by unauthorized third parties. The company might now wish -at extra costs and time- to try and recover these domain names.
Needless to say that the motto better safe than sorry applies particularly in this instance.
Prior to any change of name, IP Twins strongly advises registering domain names anonymously, at the very least in a defensive perspective.
Given the well-known status of Yahoo!, the name Altaba will very likely be the subject of intense cybersquatting.
IP Twins recommends setting up watches to monitor the registration of domain names as well as the use of the trademark on the internet.
