The .DE extension celebrated its 30th anniversary on 5 November of this year.
In fact, the .DE extension which is the country code of Germany and exists since 5 November 1988 was one of the first ten country codes to be attributed by IANA. This TLD had humble beginnings. It took ten years for the first 20000 domain names to be registered.
DENIC, the non-profit organization which runs the .DE, pushed this extension to dizzying heights!
.DE with 16.1 million domain names registered (and 7.8 million registrants) is now the world’s third TLD after .COM (127.3 million) and .CN (China, 19.5 million). 93% of .DE extensions are registered by German residents which means that this extension has a 65% market share in Germany, a large share in comparison with other countries while the .COM extension has a 20% market share. The traffic generated by .DE is also higher than average with 40000 searches per second on DENIC servers. The vitality of this extension contributed to the fast growth of the digital economy in Germany. There, 20% of sales revenue for non-food related goods and services is obtained by internet transactions.
As a reminder, .DE domain names may be registered freely. However, apart from litigation procedures, there are no administrative procedures linked to this extension. It is therefore easier and less expensive to register a .DE domain name than to initiate legal proceedings in Germany.
