The Internet root hits 1500 active TLDs

October 7, 2016

The root of the internet now contains 1500 active top-level domains. Taking into account national and territorial TLDs, the symbolic threshold of 1500 extensions has been hit earlier this week, with the delegation of .通販 (.shopping in Japanese) and .DVR, for « digital video recorder ».

With the transition of IANA functions, these two TLDs were the last ones requiring the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s approval prior to their delegation. The new gTLDs which are yet to be delegated will not need such approval.

This round number marks the beginning of the end of the first round of new gTLDs and reminds us that the second round is closer than one might think. Trademark owners and companies will, again, need to be prepared for this new round, which practical implications still need to be defined.
